For two decades, the deal behind search was simple. Publishers created content, Google ranked it, and searchers clicked through to read it. Rankings meant traffic, and traffic meant revenue.
That deal is being rewritten. Google now answers many questions directly with AI Overviews. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity summarise the web in a conversation. And a growing share of searches never produce a click at all.
In early 2026, about 68% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click, according to SparkToro data. For any business that depends on organic traffic, this is no longer a future trend. It is the current landscape. This article explains what is changing, why it matters, and how to adapt.
AI Overviews: the answer sits above your link
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of the results page. They pull information from several sources and present a direct answer before any organic listing.
The effect on clicks is now well documented. In a February 2026 study of 300,000 keywords, Ahrefs found AI Overviews cut the click-through rate of the top-ranking page by 58%. Eighteen months earlier, the same measurement had shown a 34.5% drop. The impact has grown, not faded.
Causal research points the same way. A randomized field study published in April 2026 found that when AI Overviews appeared, organic clicks fell 38% and zero-click searches rose from 54% to 72%.
There are early signs of stabilization. Seer Interactive reported that CTR on queries with AI Overviews bottomed out at 1.3% in December 2025 and recovered to 2.4% by February 2026. Still, ranking first no longer guarantees the traffic it once did.
AI-powered search engines: a small but fast-growing channel
Beyond Google, people now search inside AI assistants. They ask ChatGPT for product comparisons, use Perplexity for research, and turn to Gemini or Claude for quick explanations. These tools cite sources, and some of those citations become clicks.
The channel is growing quickly from a small base. SE Ranking found that AI platforms sent 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026, a 16x increase since 2024. ChatGPT leads with roughly 75% of AI referrals, followed by Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and Claude.
Perspective matters, though. The same study shows that organic search still accounts for 42.75% of website traffic, meaning Google sends about 134 times as many visitors as AI platforms. AI search is not replacing Google traffic yet. It adds a new layer in which brands must be visible, often before a user ever reaches a results page.
Zero-click searches: when the search ends on Google
A zero-click search is one where the user gets what they need on the results page and leaves without visiting any website. Featured snippets, knowledge panels, weather boxes, and calculators started this trend years ago. AI Overviews have accelerated it.
SparkToro's data shows the U.S. zero-click rate rose from about 60% in 2024 to 68% in early 2026. AI Overviews, which now appear on more than 20% of Google searches, are a likely contributor.
Not every query is equally affected. Informational searches such as "what is" and "how to" questions lose the most clicks. Branded searches, local business queries, and high-intent transactional searches still drive meaningful traffic, because users need to visit a site to book, buy, or contact someone. This split is reshaping which content is worth producing.
Rankings still matter, but visibility is the new metric
AI search has created a gap between ranking and being seen. A page can hold position one and still lose most of its clicks if an AI Overview answers the question first. Many site owners now see a familiar pattern in Search Console: impressions stay steady or rise, while clicks fall.
This means traditional rank tracking tells only part of the story. The more useful questions are now:
- Is our brand cited inside AI Overviews for our key topics?
- Do ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity mention us when users ask about our category?
- Are the clicks we still receive higher-intent and better-converting?
Being cited carries real value even without a click. Seer Interactive's 2026 data shows brands cited in AI Overviews earned a 15.74% paid click-through rate on the same queries, compared with 11.19% when not cited. Visibility inside the answer builds trust that pays off elsewhere.
How to adapt your SEO strategy
The goal is no longer only to rank. It is to be the source AI systems trust and cite. This discipline is often called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Here is where to focus.
- Write answer-first content. Open each section with a clear, direct answer, then add depth. AI systems extract concise, well-structured passages more easily.
- Show real expertise. Original data, first-hand experience, expert authors and specific examples make content harder to summarise away and more likely to be cited.
- Use structured data. Schema markup for products, FAQs, articles, reviews and organizations helps search engines understand your pages.
- Build brand authority beyond your site. AI models draw on mentions across reviews, forums, news and industry publications. Digital PR and community presence now directly support search visibility.
- Target high-intent queries. Prioritize transactional, commercial, local and branded searches, where users still need to click.
- Keep content fresh and crawlable. Update key pages regularly and make sure AI crawlers are not blocked unintentionally.
- Measure differently. Track AI citations, brand mentions, AI referral traffic in analytics, and conversions per visit, not just rankings and total sessions.
Conclusion
AI search is not ending organic traffic, but it is changing what that traffic looks like. There will be fewer clicks for simple informational queries, more competition for citations in AI answers, and higher value placed on visitors who do click through.
Google remains the dominant source of website visits, so SEO fundamentals still matter. The winners will be brands that pair strong technical SEO with genuine authority, so that both search engines and AI models see them as the answer worth citing.
